Love And Be Loved

The first time I painted clouds, I was in a dorm my sophomore year in college. We had just received a cancer diagnosis for my grandmother.

It felt so cliche. So annoying that all I could think of was rain clouds, during a time when I needed art to be a little more powerful, and a little more subtle.

When I called her, she didn’t cry, or get angry, or seem phased in the least. She asked me if I was okay. Asked me about class, told me about the chipmunks in her yard and her cat that wanted to eat them. Like it was just another Tuesday.

At the end of the conversation, she simply sighed and said, “We’ll mosey on through this, honey. Just like the rest of it.” Before hanging up, I got out my watercolors. I threw blues and yellows and patterns into my sketchbook. Happy rain clouds were born.

I never shared these for years, thinking they were a wee bit corny. But with MAGIC!, these clouds just kept showing up. These zany sky-scapes express the abstract, hurt, and complications of such memories. They also whisper of hope, and the peace that comes with love and being loved.
